What’s black, white and read all over? For the more than 300 guests at the Library Foundation of Needham’s (LFN) inaugural Black, White & Read All Over gala on Saturday, October 18, 2008, the answer was the Needham Free Public Library. The Library was transformed into a festive sea of black, white and red as Needham residents and others raised over $40,000 in support of the LFN. The Foundation supports library programs and services not provided by the town budget, which funds only essential library operations. In addition to mingling with neighbors and friends, guests enjoyed food and drinks and the sounds of the Beantown Brass Quintet as they bid on vacations, artwork and other silent auction items during the first half of the evening. Later, Needham Author Barbara Delinsky opened the live auction with her thoughts on the importance of libraries in the community. Massachusetts State Senator Scott Brown and State Representative Lida Harkins then emceed the live auction. Gala guests bid generously on items including vacation packages, Red Sox Tickets, “day in the life” packages with Brown, Harkins and Channel 5’s Gail Huff, and luncheons with Needham Selectman Jerry Wasserman and Superintendant Dan Gutekanst. “The gala brought together people of all ages from Needham and beyond, who demonstrated their belief in the importance of the library,” said Rose Doherty, LFN president. “The whole town was responsible for making this possible, from our generous sponsors to our many volunteers including 14 students from Needham High School, to the 168 donors through our online and live auctions.”
