Patrons entering the library from the main parking lot are welcomed by the bluestone floors and cherry wood paneling of the vestibule and lobby. The bronze and cherry wood donor recognition wall will be the most prominent visual feature of the lobby space. Designed to serve as the main reception space for the adjacent Community Room, the entry lobby may be accessed outside of normal library operating hours. The entry lobby also provides direct access to the Circulation Lobby. With flexible seating 150 guests, the Community Room is expected to become a favorite gathering place for lectures, presentations, exhibits, musical performances, and group meetings. The room can be divided into two smaller spaces allowing simultaneous programming. Walls over looking the lobby are comprised of opaque glass, allowing natural light to enter while screening out with distractions. The remainder of the room is paneled in warm cherry wood complemented by carpeted floor and bronze burnished light fixtures. The room is wired for sound and audiovisual presentations. Contingent to the entry lobby/vestibule the room may be accessed outside of normal library operating hours. Located off the Community Room, the Pantry includes a sink, refrigerator, microwave and cabinets to allow the serving of light refreshments during Community Room events. * There are two book drops, one each for books and audio-visual materials. The book drops are designed to be open around the clock every day of the week (24/7). They are located outside the Main Entrance in the main library parking lot in the rear. The heart of the library, the Circulation Lobby is the hub of all activity within the library. From the Lobby, patrons can receive assistance and information from the Circulation Desk, or continue on to the Children's Room, the Fiction Wing and Audio-visual collections, or the second floor. Designed as a welcoming and open space, the Circulation Lobby is distinguished by its bluestone floors and cherry paneled walls, punctuated by the new circulation desk. This is the hub of the Library, where all materials are checked-out. The Circulation Desk is made of cherry with granite countertops, and includes a wheelchair accessible section. * This comfortable area is adjacent to the Circulation Lobby. It is an excellent place to curl up with a book or to wait for a ride. The Reading Lounge is open to the 2nd floor and offers a view of Rosemary Lake. The cork flooring was selected for its noise dampening features as well as its warm look. Comfortable upholstered chairs and low tables complete the warm, cozy feel of this space. * Needham is a community of readers. This light filled stack area contains the popular fiction collection, including audio-visual materials, mysteries and large-print books. Comfortable, upholstered seating is provided along the west wall windows with its expansive views of Rosemary Lake. Books stack ends are a rich cherry wood complimenting the soothing wall colors. The Children’s Room is designed for children from toddlers to eighth grade. This welcoming 6,310 square feet of space is located directly off the Circulation Lobby for easy access from the library parking lot. This space includes the book and audiovisual collections, individual computer stations and study carrels, a play area and reading alcove, a craft room and story hour room. A dedicated 480 square foot space for children’s craft programs is a key feature of the Children’s Craft Room. This flexible space has an in room sink and storage, as well as pin-up and display areas. The Craft Room is painted in bright colors and floored with linoleum. * 450 square feet are provided in the Story Hour Room. The space has a carpeted floor and is painted in a cheerful color. The Story Hour room is distinguished by its undulating cherry ceiling and wall screen, setting a theatrical tone in a warm and comfortable environment. * This bright and cheerful area which over looks an outdoor garden provides space both for play and quiet reading. Snuggle in a comfortable chair with your child and share a favorite book or sit on the carpeted floor and play with age-appropriate toys. * Does your child need help finding materials for a school project? Do you need help in finding a children’s book or a video? Then the Children’s Room Desk is the place to come. Built at a child-friendly height this cherry wood desk is the focal point of the Children’s Room. Reference materials are separated from the rest of the children’s room to allow for quiet study and research. Access to the collection is via a gentle up ramp or stairs. Shelving is at a child friendly-height and study tables and computers are available. * * * * A cozy oval space located in what was a staircase in the 1915 building. This quiet room comfortably seats 4. It is adjacent to the historic Bosworth and Wyeth Rooms and is designed for quiet reading of materials from business reference and periodicals collections. * This space is located on the Second Floor, along the axis from the main stair to the 1915 Entrance. Centrally located within the Library, this space is anchors the reference and nonfiction departments, as well as the History, Genealogy, and Archive rooms. The Gallery is a unique space, with cork floors, cherry cabinetry and a curved plaster ceiling that recalls the vaulted space in the original library's Carter Lobby. Naturally lit by a clerestory and museum quality lighting, the Gallery captures the grandeur and ambience of the 1915 Reading Rooms in an open and flexible space. Centrally located in the Reference Room the Reference Desk is convenient to the reference collection, computer stations, the Local History/Genealogy, and the Laura Willgoose Archive rooms. The cherry wood desk with a granite top reflects the serious work conducted in the Reference Room. This space encourages research and life-long learning. Computer stations with Internet and catalog access and study carrels are located here, adjacent to the Reference Desk. The space is a mixture of carpet and cork, and will have large windows, allowing views over Rosemary Street and toward downtown Needham. This area is centrally located for all patrons who also want to access the archives, local history, periodicals and non-fiction collection. Each Group Study Room has seating for 2, a table and computer with Internet access. Located adjacent to the Reference Room for easy access to materials, the rooms are an oasis for quiet study. The rooms are carpeted and each has a window overlooking Highland Avenue. * This space is specifically designed to fit the needs of the young adult/teenager. This spacious room, adjacent to the reference area, provides comfortable seating and computers. Students can use this space to do homework or read a book from the collection. This glass enclosed room overlooks Rosemary Lake and is a spectacular place to view a sunset. This area is adjacent to the Gallery. It is an excellent place to do research or to look out the window and enjoy the sunset over Rosemary Lake. Flooring is cork and seating is provided both by study carrels and tables with chairs. Needham is a town of life-long learners. This light filled stack area contains the non-fiction collection. Individual study carrels are located along the west wall. Books stack ends are a rich cherry wood complimenting the soothing wall colors. Do you want to see what your house looked like in the 1950’s? Are you tracking your family tree? This is the place to come. The Local History/Genealogy Room is located off the Gallery and adjacent to the Laura Willgoose Archives. Tables with chairs will provide space to spread out materials while doing research. This conference room is designed for library related group meetings for up to 15 people. Trustee’s meetings and small Friend’s committee meetings will be held in here.
